Gaddafi's office destroyed in air strike: official

Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi's office in his immense Tripoli residence was destroyed in a NATO air strike early on Monday, while loud explosions were heard in several districts of the capital as warplanes roared overhead.

A Libyan official accompanying journalists at Gaddafi's compound said 45 people were wounded, 15 seriously, in the bombing. He added that he did not know whether there were victims under the rubble.

"It was an attempt to assassinate Colonel Gaddafi," he affirmed.

Saif al-Islam, Gaddafi's son, described the bombing as

Libyan rebels take to the world stage

Libyan rebels make their first appearance on a world stage Wednesday, seeking international recognition and support for their stance that that Muammar al-Gaddafi's departure is the only way out of Libya's crisis.

On the eve of the first meeting of an international contact group, a spokesman for the rebel Transitional National Council said it will accept nothing short of the removal of Gaddafi and his sons from the country.

Mahmud Shammam, whose council is seeking international approval, stressed: "We want to move from the de facto recognition of the council to an internationally-recognised legitimacy
