82 of 87 seats contested in Singapore GE

The ruling PAP in Singapore was not returned to government on Nomination Day on Wednesday.

It is facing contest in all the 12 single-member constituencies (SMCs) and 14 of the 15 Group Representation Constituencies (GRCs).

There will be a three-cornered fight in Punggol East single-member constituency (SMC), straight fights in all other constituencies except Tanjong Pagar Group Representation Constituency (GRC).

GE: "Lots of debates within PAP"

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong says the ruling People's Action Party is broad-based, has a range of views and has lots of debates within the party.

But then, there is still a limit to what can be discussed openly.

He was addressing a question on the need for more plurality of voices in Parliament at a live TV forum on Channel NewsAsia, called "Question Time with the Prime Minister", on Tuesday.

HDB acquires 39 flats from owners for infringing subletting rules

The HDB compulsorily acquired 39 flats from their owners last year as they had blatantly infringed the subletting rules.

One of the flats acquired was at Pinnacle@Duxton. The owner had sublet the entire flat without HDB's approval in the guise of subletting of rooms, shortly after the flat purchase in January last year.

During its night inspections in May and June 2010, HDB found that the owner was not staying at the flat. HDB's investigations revealed that the owner did not have any intention to stay in the flat and had bought it purely for monetary gains.

Good for S'pore to have strong govt & opposition

Political observers said it would be good for Singapore to have a strong government and opposition, but for a two-party system to work, both sides need to attract the right talents.

They were responding to Tuesday's comments made by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong that such a system could never work for Singapore because it is tough assembling an A-team.

Mr Lee also noted that it is a challenge to attract talents from the private sector.

Of the 15 candidates unveiled so far by the ruling People's Action Party, two-thirds are from the public sector and labour movement.
