Japan PM expresses regret over radioactive release

Japan should have told its neighbours it was releasing radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean, Prime Minister Naoto Kan said Sunday, after the move raised concern in Seoul and Beijing.

"We should have given firmer explanations," he told reporters while visiting victims of the huge earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan nearly a month ago, knocking out cooling systems at the Fukushima nuclear plant.

The plant's operator, Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO), is battling to avert a nuclear disaster following a series of explosions and the release of radioactive material into the atmosphere.

Emergency workers were this week forced to dump more than 10,000

Japan's Prime Minister Naoto Kan on Saturday visited emergency crew who have struggled to stabilise a tsunami-hit nuclear plant that has leaked radiation into the air, ground and ocean.

The visit came as the firm operating the Fukushima power station announced it had discovered a crack in a pit leaking highly radioactive water straight into the sea.

Donning a blue workman's outfit, the prime minister arrived by military helicopter to give a pep talk to the atomic plant workers, firefighters and troops battling to shut down the plant.
