Obama hits out at oil giants over high pump prices

US President Barack Obama called on Congress on Tuesday to cut $4 billion in subsidies to profit-churning oil firms, as higher gasoline prices squeeze families and harm his political prospects.

"We have got a real problem here. Families day-to-day, they are driving to work. They are just watching their pay cheques get whittled away. They need some relief," Obama told WXYZ television, Detroit.

The president wrote to Republican and Democratic leaders on Capitol Hill, calling on them to "eliminate unwarranted tax breaks" to the oil and gas industry and to reinvest in clean energy to cut US dependence on foreign oil.

US charges four Pakistanis in Mumbai attack plot

Four Pakistanis have been charged as co-conspirators in the 2008 Mumbai attack that killed 166 people, including six Americans, US prosecutors said on Monday.
The four were previously mentioned, but not named, in indictments charging American David Headley and Pakistani-born Chicago businessman Tahawwur Rana with helping to identify targets in Mumbai.

Obama to set out budget plan on Wednesday

Aides say President Barack Obama will lay out plans to reduce the soaring US budget deficit on Wednesday, setting the stage for a major battle that could define his re-election campaign.

Washington is still regrouping from the political jousting that led to the near shutdown of the federal government at the weekend, but looming on the horizon are even bigger battles over the debt ceiling and the 2012 budget.
