Almodovar, Malick films among 19 selected for Cannes competition

Spanish director Pedro Almodovar’s “The Skin That I Inhabit” and British director Terrence Malick’s “Tree of Life” are among 19 films competing at the 64th Cannes Film Festival, organisers said Thursday.
Danish filmmaker Lars Von Trier’s “Melancholia” was also selected from a total 1,715 films watched, festival head of selection Thierry Fremaux told journalists alongside festival president Gilles Jacob “We have a special thought for Japan this year, but also for Tunisia and Egypt,” Jacob said,

GE: SPP eyes Ang Mo Kio GRC

The Singapore People's Party (SPP) is making plans to contest in Ang Mo Kio GRC. The team is likely to be led by 23-year-old Alex Tan, a financial adviser.

The SPP is the first political party to declare its intention to contest in the GRC, which is helmed by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Mr Tan said he has assembled a team for the six-member constituency, and is putting together its battle plans.

Details of the team will be revealed in due course, and he said the team will comprise new faces and experienced

Bertolucci to receive Cannes honorary award

 Italian cinema legend Bernardo Bertolucci, whose classics include "Last Tango in Paris" and "The Last Emperor," is to receive an honorary Palme d'Or at Cannes, festival organisers said on Monday.

The award has previously been presented on an ad hoc basis to movie directors such as Woody Allen or Clint Eastwood but will now become an annual event, with Bertolucci the first recipient, they said in statement.

"His political and social involvement, driven by a profound lyricism and an elegant and accurate direction, gives his films a unique place in the history of world cinema," it added.

The festival on the French Riviera opens on May 11 with
