Indonesian leader unworried by radical Islam rise

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono acknowledged that Islamic radicalism may be on the rise in his country but said he was not worried it would spiral out of control.

Speaking to US public television, Yudhoyono said that the world's most populous Muslim-majority nation offered proof that Islam was compatible with democracy and that radical groups had small membership.

"I can see to a certain degree there is an escalation of radicalism in many countries. Probably we could see also that kind of thing that happens in Indonesia," Yudhoyono told "The Charlie

Japan vows to stand by tsunami survivors

 Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan pledged Sunday he would "never abandon" survivors of Japan's tsunami as he tried to focus attention on the future, despite a high-stakes battle at a nuclear plant.

Kan, in only his second trip to the disaster zone in the month since the March 11 tragedy, was due to visit survivors to hear directly from victims to help shape policy in the weeks and months ahead, the government said.

He will also call on all Japanese to keep spending, it was reported, as worries mount over the effect of the quake-tsunami on the world's third largest economy.

GE: S'poreans can decide what real issues are, says Shanmugam

 Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam has said Singaporeans are capable of deciding for themselves what the real issues are in the coming General Election and not be distracted by Internet chatter.

He said this when asked if Internet comments on some candidates could detract from the real concerns of the country.

He was speaking to reporters after the official opening of a park in Nee Soon South on Sunday.

The Internet has been abuzz with comments related to the upcoming General Election.
