Golf: Schwartzel wins 75th Masters with closing birdie binge

South African Charl Schwartzel birdied the last four holes on Sunday to win the 75th Masters by two strokes over Australians Adam Scott and Jason Day in a dramatic back-nine showdown.

Schwartzel's third birdie in a row was a tension-packed eight-foot putt at the 17th hole that left him needing only to par the 18th to win his first major title at age 26.

Instead, he dropped a 15-footer for birdie to finish off a six-under par 66, the day's low round, and conclude 72 holes on 14-under par 274, denying Scott and Day their dream of becoming

Golf: McIlroy in charge at Masters as Woods fades

Rory McIlroy survived multiple assaults on his Masters lead in Saturday's third round to emerge four strokes clear of the field.

That put him in pole position to become the first Irishman to win the Masters, the first European since Jose Maria Olazabal in 1999 and, at 21 years and 11 months, the second-youngest winner behind only Tiger Woods in 1997.

The Ulsterman battled hard all day for a two-under 70 that put him at 12-under par, four strokes clear of a international quartet consisting of Jason Day, Angel Cabrera, Charl Schwartzel and K.J. Choi.

Golf: Tiger chases Mcllroy at Masters

Tiger Woods roared into contention Friday at the 75th Masters by displaying the long-absent form that made him a 14-time major champion even as young stars Rory McIlroy and Jason Day shined.

Northern Ireland's McIlroy fired a three-under par 69 to stand on 10-under par 134 after 36 holes for a two-shot edge over Day, a Masters debutante from Australia whose eight-under 64 matched Augusta National's lowest second round.

"I've got myself into great position in this golf tournament. I feel as if I'm hitting it as well as anyone else," McIlroy said.
