Fed chief says jobs, housing holding back US recovery

High unemployment and a sclerotic housing market are holding back the US recovery, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said on Friday.

Lamenting the social costs of high joblessness and a depressed housing market, Bernanke said community groups, local leaders and businesses could all help stop the bleeding.

"Our economy is far from where we would like it to be, and many people and neighbourhoods are in danger of being left behind," he told an audience in Arlington, Virginia.

GE: GRC scheme here to stay

 Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has said the Group Representation Constituency (GRC) scheme is here to stay.

The relevance of the scheme was raised at a Chinese language forum televised at 8pm on Channel 8 on Saturday. It was a question that had been asked by a viewer via SMS.
