Gaddafi refuses to quit, calls for talks with US, France

 Muammar Gaddafi said he will not quit power and called for negotiations with the United States and France to end the Libyan 
conflict, in a speech aired on television early on Saturday.

NATO "must abandon all hope of the departure of Muammar Gaddafi. I have no official functions to give up: I will not leave my country and will fight to 
the death," he said in a speech marking the centenary of a battle against Italian occupation forces.

"We are ready to talk with France and the United States, but with no preconditions," he said.

Lindsay Lohan released on $75,000 bail

Troubled American starlet Lindsay Lohan was released after spending less than five hours in jail when she posted $75,000 in bail, court officials said Saturday.
The 24-year-old was sentenced late Friday to 120 days in jail for violating her probation and ordered to complete community service at the Los Angeles County morgue and a women’s center.

25 killed as Syrian tanks storm Daraa


Thousands of Syrian troops backed by tanks stormed the flashpoint town of Daraa on Monday killing at least 25 people, witnesses said, as a leading rights activist accused Damascus of opting for a "military solution" to crush dissent.

Troops also launched assaults on the Damascus suburbs of Douma and Al-Maadamiyeh, witnesses said, as the head of the UN human rights agency slammed what she called the security forces' disregard for human life.

The United States, which has repeatedly denounced Syria's repression of the protests, was considering sanctions against Damascus, an official in Washington said.
