Japan PM expresses regret over radioactive release

Japan should have told its neighbours it was releasing radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean, Prime Minister Naoto Kan said Sunday, after the move raised concern in Seoul and Beijing.

"We should have given firmer explanations," he told reporters while visiting victims of the huge earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan nearly a month ago, knocking out cooling systems at the Fukushima nuclear plant.

The plant's operator, Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO), is battling to avert a nuclear disaster following a series of explosions and the release of radioactive material into the atmosphere.

JAPAN'S prime minister today surveyed the damage caused by the devastating earthquake and tsunami that killed as many as 25,000.

His visit came as officials revealed that highly radioactive water was leaking into the sea from the nuclear power station stricken by the disaster.
The Fukushima plant has been spewing radioactivity since March 11, when its cooling systems were knocked out by the tsunami.
