Delegates attend dinner at Istana

Delegates attending the Shangri-La Dialogue, which is now into its 10th year, attended a dinner on Saturday at the Istana.

Defence ministers and leaders commemorated the 10th anniversary of the international security conference with a dinner hosted by Acting President Abdullah Tarmugi.

President SR Nathan is on a state visit to Mauritius between June 4 and 7.

Also present at the dinner was Acting Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong is
on overseas leave from June 2 to 6.

The dialogue was started in 2001 by British independent think-tank, the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS).

Since 2002, ministers and military chiefs from the Asia-Pacific countries have gathered at Singapore's Shangri-La Hotel to discuss the region's defence and security issues.

Founder of the dialogue, Dr John Chipman, was also at the event.

"The Asian Pacific needed a defence ministers' institution, and with Singapore, the IISS has been honoured to create it," Dr Chipman said.

"The Shangri-La Dialogue is a unique example of a public, private-sector partnership between the government of Singapore and the International Institute for Strategic Studies."

Acting Prime Minister Teo said: "Looking ahead, what role can the Shangri-La Dialogue play?

"I think the Shangri-La Dialogue is unique in that it is an informal discussion, it is an informal gathering of ministers and security experts from around the region.

"What it means is that, none of us needs to come here to sign a communique or to come to some agreement and make a declaration".
