Filipino nurses head to Japan to find work

Thirty-two-year-old Filipino nurse Mary Claire Autor looks forward to train and work in Japan by the end of May.

Under the Japan-Philippines Economic Partnership Agreement, Mary Claire and 80 other Filipino nurses have the opportunity to train and work in different hospitals in Japan for three years. 

Mary Claire Autor, a filipino nurse bound for Japan said: "I am also thinking of my safety but the needs of my children outweigh my fears. The economy is really very bad, and I want to give my children the things that I was not able to experience
before because we were poor."

The promise of greener pastures is also what attracted 25-year-old Anariel Gumapo to try her luck in Japan.

Her current monthly salary of US$300 is no match for the monthly salary of US$2,000 that she will be getting once she becomes a licensed nurse in Japan. 

Anariel Gumapo, another Filipino nurse bound for Japan said: "That's what I want for my family. To be able to leave the country, and help my parents and my family, without spending for anything."

While Mary Claire and Anariel train hard to master the Japanese language in order to prepare them for Japan's tough licensure exams, only 2 of the 139 Filipino nurses in the previous batches were able to pass Japan's licensure exam. 

The Japanese government hopes the preparatory language training will improve the standing of Filipino candidate nurses. 

Though language barrier is considered to be the most difficult obstacle when it comes to acing the Japanese nursing licensure examinations, the government hopes more Filipino nurses will pass and help Japan's aging population.

Akio Isomata, Minister for Economic Affairs Japanese Embassy said: "The people in Japan are starting to age. This means there will be more and more people needing health care in the future. Filipino nurses are widely known in the professional services for their tenderness and caregiving characteristics. So I think they can play a bigger role in Japan."
