Dee Hsu sued for defamation by Li Ao

Television host Dee Hsu, who won a defamation suit against a Taiwan tabloid in October last year, has herself been named in a defamation suit filed by Taiwan politician-turned-popular writer Li Ao on Monday, reported Taiwan media.

Dee Hsu had earlier joked that Li was "secretly in love with Zhang. We can't win an argument with him, we can only think that he is using this as a method to quietly show his love for her" in response to Li's harsh criticism about how her sister Barbie Hsu conducted her wedding and his calling Zhang an
"uncultured person".

Li was not amused.

"Can we joke about a woman's chastity? No. This issue concerns my character. It is not a joke," Li told reporters, explaining that Dee Hsu's comments suggested that he only criticized Zhang because he tried to pursue her and failed.

The writer added that he did not want monetary compensation but demanded that Dee Hsu engage him in three rounds of televised debate about the issue, on the popular talk show "Mr Con and Ms Csi" which she co-hosts with Taiwan television veteran Kevin Tsai.

Li has a reputation for possessing an acid tongue – he once commented that "it is a waste for Patty Hou to marry that man (Hou's husband Ken Huang)" and derided China's most popular blogger Han Han for being "unable to qualify for university education".

The 76-year-old is also well known for being a political maverick.

In 2006, when he was still an independent legislator, he once put on a mask and sprayed what appeared to be tear gas into the assembly room while brandishing a stun gun, in a bid to stop talks over an arms bill during a parliamentary committee hearing.
