S. Lanka relent over IPL issue to avoid ‘embarrassing BCCI’

Sri Lanka said on Thursday they had allowed their players to honour their Indian Premier League commitments to avoid embarrassing neighbours India.
“We are giving players more time to play the IPL before joining the team for the England tour, after several requests from the Indian cricket board,” Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage told AFP.
“We have excellent relations with the government of India and
the Indian cricket board. We don’t want to upset India. We don’t want to embarrass them (the Board of Control for Cricket India).”
Aluthgamage said it had been decided after a meeting with cricket administrators late Thursday that the players could join the team by May 18 in London.
Sri Lanka had earlier asked their players to return home by May 5 in order to prepare for the tour of England that starts with a practice game against Middlesex on May 14.
Sri Lanka have their second tour game, against England Lions, from May 19 before the first Test beginning on May 26. The IPL is set to end on May 28.
“The IPL boys have to be in London in time to play the practice match on May 19. I think the boys and the Indian cricket board will be happy with our compromise,” the minister said.
The BCCI wrote to SLC last Friday asking them to reconsider pulling out players early.
Eleven Sri Lankans play in the IPL, including former skippers Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, who captain their respective franchises.
Their early exit would have disrupted the balance of their IPL teams as the franchises were under the impression that the players would be available until May 21.
Aluthgamage said the extended deadline would only affect seven Sri Lankan players who were selected on Wednesday for a 16-member Test squad.
The minister also brushed aside speculation that the compromise had come after the Indian cricket board used its financial clout and threatened to withhold the 10 percent royalty due to SLC, in the event of an early pullout.
