GE: Tan Chuan Jin joins Marine Parade GRC team in dialogue

Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong has finally put an end to the speculation and his regular teasers of a former army general who will be joining the Marine Parade GRC team for the coming General Election.

Brigadier-General (NS) Tan Chuan Jin was introduced to grassroots leaders at a dialogue session held at the Kampong Ubi Community Club on Sunday.

It is understood that Brig-Gen (NS) Tan will understudy incumbent MP Ong Seh Hong who has announced that he will be stepping down.

In his earlier postings on the Marine Parade Facebook page, Senior Minister Goh wrote that he is planning to have someone to succeed him "in leading the GRC one day".

He said he had asked Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong to send him "a strong candidate who has the potential to be part of the fourth gen (generation) core team".

The six-member Marine Parade GRC has been re-constituted as a five-man GRC for the coming election and with the single-member ward MacPherson absorbed into the area.

Incumbent MP for MacPherson Matthias Yao is retiring.

The five-member Marine Parade GRC is likely to comprise anchor minister Mr Goh, Dr Fatimah Lateef, Mr Seah Kian Peng, Ms Tin Pei Ling and Brig-Gen (NS) Tan.

Ms Tin is a new PAP candidate.

Dr Lateef and Mr Seah are incumbent MPs in the constituency.

The other two current MPs in Marine Parade are Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim and Lim Biow Chuan.

Mr Faishal Ibrahim will move to Nee Soon GRC.

Parts of Joo Chiat have also been carved out and absorbed into Marine Parade GRC.

Brig-Gen (NS) Tan is among several high flyers from the Singapore Armed Forces and the public service who have stepped down in recent days to enter politics and have been seen in the wards they are likely to be fielded in.

Among them are former Chief of Army, Major-General (NS) Chan Chun Sing, who has been introduced in the Buona Vista division of the Tanjong Pagar GRC, former managing director of the Monetary Authority of Singapore, Heng Swee Keat (Tampines GRC) and the former CEO of the Energy Market Authority, Lawrence Wong (West Coast GRC).

So far, the PAP has introduced 12 new candidates. More introductions are expected in coming days.
