Judee Tan and Joanna Dong: Papaya Sisters from very different trees

Singapore director Royston Tan's 2007 film "881" gave audiences a look into the colourful world of getai (literally "Song Stages" in Hokkien), where performers entertain the spirits of the departed during the annual Hungry Ghost Festival.

But local theatre company Toy Factory's director Goh Boon Teck is upping the ante and staging a grand theatre adaptation of the film "881 The Musical" at the Esplanade Theatre in April.

"We gave all the characters a fuller characterization, have more music, more Hokkien evergreens," said Goh, adding that it will also feature
a lot of extremely elaborate costumes.

"If you don't come for anything else, come for the 'fashion show'," he joked, during an interview earlier this month at the production's rehearsal grounds.

The S$1.8 million-dollar production, which holds the distinction of being the first theatre adaptation of a Singapore film, will feature a brand new cast as well.

Singapore actresses Judee Tan and Joanna Dong will play the female leads of "881 The Musical", aspiring
getai singers The Papaya Sisters.

In the show, the two good friends fight against the odds (and their rivals, the terrible Durian Sisters) to keep on performing, with help from the Goddess of Getai (played by newcomer Lindy Chia).
