Cinco De Mayo Fiesta With Cafe Rio

The annual celebration of Mexican culture in the United States, Cinco de Mayo, this weekend had a lot of hats and enchiladas.

The festival began on 5 May 1862, when 4,000 Mexican soldiers victorious in the Battle of Puebla against 6,000 French soldiers, according to PBS. Mexican troops were a disadvantage not only in numbers, fought with the "antiquated rifles and machetes," said PBS.

Today the festival is primarily a celebration of Mexican culture in the United States, but replicas of the Battle of Puebla, yet to take place.

One of the first festivals, according to the Washington Post, was in California in 1863.

In 1862, the French had come to collect a debt owed by the Mexican government. Mexico was nearly bankrupt and called for a two-year extension. PBS says that France rejected the extension probably because it is a pretext for war, a pretext to weaken Mexico and wanted a tactical advantage over the growing power of the United States.

All this happened during the American Civil War.
