Overseas Singaporeans cast votes

Fifty-nine Singaporeans overseas are eligible to cast their votes on Saturday in the Punggol East by-elections.

A small number of Singaporeans based in Hong Kong voted at the Consulate-General office in Admiralty.

The office is open from 8am to 8pm Singapore/Hong Kong time.

Victor Liow, a Punggol East resident who runs a family business in Guangzhou, made
a special two-hour train journey to Hong Kong to cast his vote.

Mr Liow said: "Overall, I just hope that they can finish up the Rivervale Plaza as soon as possible.

"(I also hope) they build more child-care (centres in the area) because it's quite a big problem. My brother and sister are staying there and they had some problems previously finding a childcare centre for their kids."

The Singapore Consulate in Shanghai was another of the 9 polling stations worldwide where overseas Singaporeans cast their ballots.

A handful of voters arrived after doors opened at 8am.

Ballots will be flown back to Singapore overnight.
