Jam Hsiao

WHEN Taiwanese singer Jam Hsiao released Mr. Jazz: A Song For You in May, it took even the most diehard of fans by surprise.
The album consists entirely of covers of popular English oldies, including The Cascades’ Rhythm Of The Rain and Elton John’s Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word – all re-arranged in a laidback, jazzy style.
Ardent followers of the 25-year-old powerhouse vocalist, who burst to fame in 2007 as a guest challenger on TV talent search One Million Star, had built
up a reputation for himself as a versatile rocker, at ease handling both Steven Tyler-esque maniacal shrieks and the raspy melodrama of Rod Stewart.
In an interview with local reporters yesterday afternoon, while in town to promote his upcoming concert at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, the famously reticent star said with a smile: “I know there were some people who found my jazz covers album very refreshing.
