GE: PM reaches out to the young

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has said the government is making special efforts to engage young people.

He said there are many young voters in this election as almost all seats are being contested.

Young Singaporeans are pondering their choices, whom to vote for and who to support.

Mr Lee has a special message for them as they prepare to vote: "We've nurtured you, educated you, prepared you, given you every help to do well. We cherish you, we cheer for you. We want you to succeed because Singapore belongs
to you. You will be Singapore but you must make Singapore even better than what it is today."

Mr Lee said the government will tap their ideas and energies and involve them in building Singapore. He said efforts are now being made to engage the young but the government must do much more.

"Bringing them in, engaging them, expressing their aspirations and coping with their problems they face and maybe from time to time their frustrations and worries, that will be a major task which will face us after this General Election," said Mr Lee.

The Prime Minister was speaking at a PAP rally in Ubi in support of the party's team for Aljunied GRC on Thursday night.

After addressing the rally in Aljunied GRC, Prime Minister Lee went to the Bedok Stadium to support the PAP's team for East Coast GRC.

Speaking at that rally, he said it is not enough for Singapore to have good plans. It must also have hopes and dreams. And, this election is the time for the people to reaffirm the "compact with the PAP" and help renew the leadership for the country and connect with the new generation.

Prime Minister Lee called on Singaporeans to give his party the mandate to secure their future.

Defending his government's record over the last five years, Mr Lee said that overall, Singapore has not done too badly.

But he also acknowledged the people's concerns and promised to address them to solve their problems.

"I know that Singaporeans have not had such an easy time and some Singaporeans have had a difficult time, a difficult ride over the last five years because despite our measures some Singaporeans have faced problems; some have lost their jobs and have to be re-trained for new ones, some took new jobs but they also took pay cuts," he said.

Looking ahead, Mr Lee stressed the future is bright. He said: "We will continue to grow the economy, raise incomes across the board, including low and middle-income workers' incomes. Everybody should be able to improve their lives."

"And this strategy is working, it has taken a while. During the crisis, everybody had to tighten their belts but last year we had very good growth, bonuses have gone up, wages have gone up and this year the NWC (National Wages Council) have recommended higher total wage increases for all workers. This year they recommended it because it is justified and workers deserved it," he added.

"If we press on with this strategy - grow the economy, create new investments and new jobs - then we can have more good NWC recommendations, then workers can have better pay and every year life can get better for us," said Mr Lee.
