Foreign Minister George Yeo leaves politics

Foreign Minister George Yeo said on Tuesday he will not be contesting Aljunied GRC at the next general election.

The 57-year-old Minister told a news conference that he'll leave the important task to someone younger and the new Foreign Minister will need to develop new relations.

As for his role in public life, he said he had a very good run in every ministry he has served in and couldn't have asked for more. He also added he will 'contribute in
whatever modest way possible'.

Putting on a brave front, although looking tired and disappointed with his loss, Mr Yeo took the defeat in his stride and said this was the people's choice which he respects and this is what politics is about.

He also added he will help 'in whatever way possible' to bring about the transformation of the People's Action Party.

Mr Yeo said Singapore's political development is entering a new phase.

So how the government responds to it will decide Singapore's destiny in the 21st century.

On his next career move, Mr Yeo said he's not rushing to decide and added that he and his wife agreed he should take time to think things over.

But he said he won't run for the elected presidency because he's a free spirit, not temperamentally suitable for that role.

At the news conference, he also added he's touched that the ASEAN ministers and leaders have expressed sadness and disappointment that he's no longer the Foreign Affairs Minister.

But he said Foreign Ministers come and go and don't foresee a major change in bilateral relations between Singapore and other countries.
