Viewing Mount Fuji from a legendary place

A luxurious painting sprinkled with gold portrays the "Legend of Hagoromo" or the tale of a heavenly maiden in feathered robe.

It is a story portrayed in many works of art. They all have in common Mount Fuji, pine trees and a beautiful woman in elegant robes. It is also a very famous Noh play.

Mayumi Endo, who runs an inn in Miho no Matsubara, has studied the legend and its links to her hometown.

She also owns many works of art portraying the legend.

According to the story, there is
a path leading to the seashore called god's path and that is the best place to view Japan's most famous peak.

Ms Endo said: "The heavenly maiden made her way here from Mt Fuji. Miho no Matsubara was different then, as the whole peninsula was covered with pine trees. It was like a peninsula made of jade. And of them, the purest pine tree of all was where the maiden put her robe and was enjoying herself."

The pine tree of legendary times is no longer here but its status has been taken over by another tree.

Just last October, a pine tree was chosen as the third generation Hagoromo tree.

In the legend, a local fisherman called Hakuryo tries to take away the maiden's robe. She pleads for its return as she cannot return to the heavens without it. Hakuryo agrees on condition she perform her celestial dance.

Ms Endo said: "The dance of the heavenly maiden can only be enjoyed in paradise. So the story is, if she performs a dance from the world of dreams he'd return it to her."
