GE: New candidates well received

Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean said the new candidates introduced so far by the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) have been well-received on the ground.

Mr Teo, who is also the party's Second Assistant Secretary-General, said the PAP tries to renew between a quarter and a third of its candidates during each General Election (GE).

The PAP has introduced 12 new candidates so far.

Mr Teo said some of them have been working on the ground for quite a while.

"They are working hard to get to know the residents, getting to know their needs and concerns and also understanding how to help the residents improve their lives," Mr Teo said.

"That's at one level. The other level is to get themselves to be known a little more nationally and to help, subsequently, in national policy-making in Parliament.

"That's the job of parliamentarians. But I would say that as time evolves, we will see more of their personality and views".

Mr Teo, who was speaking to reporters at a carnival organised by the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC), added the party's rejuvenation programme also applies to the minority candidates.

"The last round, we had a particularly good group and many of them are still young," he said.

"So, among the Malay candidates, we may not need to turn over as many as we have done previously. We are still progressing with rejuvenation as and when we find good, strong candidates."

For the coming GE, a good number of candidates will be fielded from the NTUC.

The labour movement said this is part of its contributions towards enhancing tripartism and the betterment of workers' lives in Singapore.

NTUC's president John De Payva said he expects close to seven candidates.

"We should have more of them because we are tripartite, we grow together, we share the same ideals," Mr De Payva said.

"We want to grow the country, the economy. We want workers' salaries to go up and we want the 30 per cent increase in wages in the next 10 years.

"So you need grassroots leaders and these are young people. We fully support them."

As many of the new candidates walk the ground in the wards they're likely to be fielded in, more candidates are expected to be introduced next week by both the PAP and the opposition parties
