GE: Ho Peng Kee announces retirement from politics

Senior Minister of State for Law and Home Affairs, Associate Professor Ho Peng Kee, has announced he will be retiring from politics at the end of this term.

That means Associate Professor Ho will not be contesting the upcoming elections.

In a statement to the media on Thursday, he said he would have completed four terms by then.

With Associate Professor Ho stepping down, this brings the number of office holders retiring after the
next general election to three.

The first two to announce their retirement were Senior Minister S Jayakumar and Speaker of Parliament, Abdullah Tarmugi.

Associate Professor Ho said it has been a very fulfilling and satisfying time for him, both on the ground in Nee Soon East as well as in the many offices he has held.

He said he informed the Prime Minister that he would like to retire from politics some time last year. And he said he is glad that the Prime Minister has agreed.

While he has no intentions to become a missionary after leaving politics, Associate Professor Ho said he would certainly be more active in church as an elder.

He does not intend to return to teach full-time at the NUS Law Faculty, but hopes to do some part-time teaching there.

Associate Professor Ho said he would also continue to support important causes like promoting sports, nurturing volunteerism and helping youths to realise their potential, all of which he said he had espoused consistently all these 20 years in public service.

Associate Professor Ho is currently the MP for Nee Soon East SMC, which has been absorbed into the new 5-member Nee Soon GRC following the redrawing of the electoral boundaries.

Law Minister K Shanmugam is likely to be the anchor minister at the GRC and it has been confirmed that Dr Muhammad Faishal, currently with Marine Parade GRC, will move to Nee Soon.

New faces which have been spotted making their rounds in the GRC are lawyers Edwin Tong and Vikram Nair as well as unionist Patrick Tay.

Nee Soon GRC is expected to be contested, with opposition parties like the Workers' Party and the National Solidarity Party having expressed interest in the ward.
