Food stalls join anti-inflation drive

More than 1,000 food stalls in Singapore are doing their part to help ease the pressure of increasing prices.

This was announced by the chairman of the Retail Price Watch Group (RPWG) and Minister of State for Trade and Industry and Manpower Lee Yi Shyan at Food Republic in Wisma Atria.

Food Junction and Food Republic on Friday became the latest to join in with their support.

Food Junction and all of its tenants have pledged to maintain their prices for the next six months.

This is across all its 13 food courts at its 216 stalls.

Food Junction chief financial officer Eric Gan said: "When we first broached the subject about them revising their price list to reflect the general increase in operating costs, we were surprised that more than 90 per cent of them indicated they had no intention to do so."

Mr Gan added that many of their tenants believe that the inflation is only temporary and are confident of the government's ability to rein in rising costs.

"We are hoping that our loyal customers and consumers at large, will support Food Junction's outlets and increase patronage at our stalls, and that the higher sales volume will more than mitigate any raw material cost increases," he said.

Meanwhile, Food Republic is offering a 10 per cent discount at all of the stalls in their food courts when customers present the "Food Republic Privilege Card".

150,000 cards will be distributed free-of-charge to customers and the prices at Food Republic's drinks stall, desserts stall and juice bar will also be maintained for six months.

Mr Lee said: "It is encouraging to see that businesses are also stepping up to the challenge.

"While they have different cost structures and employ different initiatives, the end result is still the same. They are doing this to help Singaporeans weather any price increases they encounter."

Since last month , hawkers from various parts of Singapore, including Bedok North, Kovan, Hougang, Serangoon North and Radin Mas, have all stepped forward voluntarily to hold their prices for six months or longer.
