Basketball: Rockets deal Spurs sixth straight defeat

 Kevin Martin scored 33 points, nine of them in overtime, as the Houston Rockets dealt the San Antonio Spurs a sixth-straight NBA defeat on Friday.

Houston's 119-114 overtime triumph marked the first time since April 1997 that San Antonio have lost six on the trot.

The Spurs' defeat, coupled with the Los Angeles Lakers' victory at Utah, saw the two-time defending champion Lakers move within 1 1/2 games of San Antonio for the best record in the Western Conference.

"We're going to see what we are made out of, if we can dig down deeper," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "We'll see if we are worth the way we played this season or not."


The Spurs trailed by 11 late in the third quarter, but forced overtime thanks to a free throw by Tim Duncan that knotted the score at 108-108 with 18 seconds remaining in regulation time.

However, Martin took over in overtime, scoring nine of Houston's 11 points. Luis Scola had 21 points and 14 rebounds for Houston.

Kyle Lowry added 14 points, and Chuck Hayes had 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Tony Parker led San Antonio with 31 points. Duncan had 23 points and 13 rebounds, and Manu Ginobili added 23 points.

"In my mind, that might be the best one we've had all year because you have this team (Spurs) come in here and they lost five in a row, which they haven't done in decades," Houston coach Rick Adelman said. "They are fighting the Lakers for the best record."

The Rockets are three games behind Memphis for the eighth and final playoff spot in the West.

"We're in a little playoff series," Scola said. "We've got six games left and we need to win them all."

In Salt Lake City, Utah's slim playoff hopes were officially extinguished by the Lakers.

Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant scored 21 points and Lamar Odom added 16 as Los Angeles erased a 17-point first-half deficit to beat the Jazz 96-85.

The Lakers outscored the Jazz 52-35 in the second half to notch their ninth straight victory.
