PAP introduces fourth batch of new GE candidates

Singapore's ruling People's Action Party introduced its fourth batch of new candidates on Wednesday for the upcoming General Election.

Two of them are lawyers while the third candidate is with the union.

PAP's organising secretary for Special Duty Ng Eng Hen said the party puts in place exhaustive and stringent measures when selecting candidates for the upcoming General Election.

Dr Ng said the search to offer "the best possible team" was carried out as early as six months after the last election in 2006.

The PAP will unveil more than 20 fresh faces for the upcoming election. It has introduced 12 candidates thus far.

Over the last four years, nearly 200 tea sessions were held with more than 260 individuals.

PAP added that those shortlisted also had to undergo intense psychological profiling.

Candidates were chosen based on four qualities.

Dr Ng said: "The first two are assessments - character assessment and proven ability.

"The other two qualities were really judgment -- did we believe that they had the guts for Singapore? Could they commit and stay the course because politics is a marathon?

"Finally, could we trust them? Because as MPs or office-holders, they would have positions of power and influence; they could be handling projects worth billions, and their decisions would affect livelihoods".

Potential candidates were also sent on the ground and feedback was received from activists and MPs.
