Hackers attack Web sites

The websites of the European Commission, executive body of the European Union, suffered a cyber attack hours before the start of a major summit of European leaders.

An EU spokesman said the Commission sites are frequently attacked by hackers, but said that this attack is particularly serious.

Remote access to e-mails of employees and other uses was blocked as a result of the attack.

EU leaders on Thursday discussed, among other things, on the fighting in Libya and nuclear safety.

It is expected that around 20,000 demonstrators protesting against the EU headquarters in Brussels on the occasion of the summit.
