Cricket: Indian and Pakistani fans all set for World Cup clash

The ICC Cricket World Cup semi-final clash between arch-rivals India and Pakistan on Wednesday is set to get all cricket fans glued to their TV sets, especially those in the Indian sub-continent.

The 200,000-strong Indian community in Singapore will be rooting their team on, despite the pressures of playing at home.

Tsewang Namgyal, the Indian Deputy High Commissioner to Singapore, said: "Players like Yuvraj Singh have been doing consistently well in this tournament. The match is being played in Punjab, Mohali, so he will be under a lot of pressure to perform. Same goes to other Indian players, including Captain Dhoni."

No formal viewings are planned, but the Indian community will be watching the match in pubs and at home.

Besides the rivalry, some feel the match could also pave the way for better relations.

Fauzia M Sana, the Pakistan High Commissioner to Singapore, said: "The best thing that people in Pakistan and the television and the public are saying is, let us go for a sixer for peace. I think that is the message that our Prime Minister will be taking to Mohali. He will be visiting there watching the match with the Prime Minister of India who invited him."

The High Commissioner said some Pakistanis in Singapore are heading to Mohali to catch the match live. Here in Singapore, the Pakistani Association will host some 200 guests at a club.

Whichever team wins on Wednesday, it is already a victory of sorts for the sub-continent. Bangladesh is hosting the tournament for the very first time. Three countries from South Asia are also playing in the semi-finals, another first for the tournament.
