Cricket: Fans eagerly await the mother of all battles

MOHALI, India: The eagerly anticipated World Cup semi-final clash between India and Pakistan on Wednesday has been called "the mother of all cricket battles".

Seats are no longer available and a 5,000-rupee (US$112) ticket is going for five times as much on the black market.

But some fans are still hoping for a ticket to get into the Mohali cricket stadium for the experience of a lifetime.

In all, some 16,000 tickets were released to the public and it was sold out within hours, leaving many disappointed.

Mohammed Farhan, who is an Indian fan, said: "I came last night from a village. We've been sitting here all day. But still we didn't get any tickets."

Mohammed Waseem, who is a Pakistani fan also went back empty-handed.

"I am still not able to get a ticket here. I got one in Bangladesh, I got one in Colombo but here I still can't find a ticket. I am asking everyone but no one seems to have it," he said.

The lucky ones who have tickets will be witnessing the match of a lifetime.

Pakistan has never beaten India in a World Cup game but the team has had a dream run this time, finishing first in the league matches.

Captain Shahid Afridi has promised to put up a tough challenge for India.

On the other hand, India are looking strong after beating defending champions Australia in the quarter-final.

They will be banking on the vast experience of star batsman Sachin Tendulkar, who is hoping to hit his 100th century in the game.

The Indian supporters are confident they will overcome their arch-rivals and book a spot in the final match.

"India are the favourites so I am sure India will win. India has a bowling and batting strength. Pakistan too has a strong bowling but their batting line-up is nothing to write home about. So it will be India's win," said Gaurav, who is an Indian fan.

The winner will meet either New Zealand or Sri Lanka in the final on Saturday.

India-Pakistan matches are always high tension as there is pressure on both teams to win.
