Star Awards 2011: Rui En and Qi Yu Wu win top honours

Singapore actress Rui En beat contenders like Chen Li Ping and Jeanette Aw to win the Best Actress award for her performance in the drama "With You", during the Star Awards 2011 Show 2 held at the Resorts World Convention Centre on Sunday night.

"When I was sitting there [in the audience], I kept telling myself I won't have to go on stage, because I don't really like speaking on stage, I feel very awkward and unsuitable for this.

"I didn't think I would win!" said Rui En, who thanked her fans and her boss for sticking by her through the low points in her

career.

"At that time (a low point in her career), my boss was very supportive of me. He kept encouraging me and never gave up on me. I am grateful."

Although Rui En was pleasantly surprised to win the Best Actress award and Top 10 Favourite Female Artistes award on Sunday, the 30-year-old actress expressed that winning the awards would not affect her attitude towards work very much.

"Whether I win or not, tomorrow I will still have to go to work ... it (her wins) just makes the pressure greater," said Rui En earnestly, before revealing that she has an early day on Monday and will head to Malaysia for a shoot very soon.

The Best Actor award went to China-born Singapore actor Qi Yu Wu for his portrayal of a lawyer with a complicated past in the drama "The Family Court".

"I am very happy to have been validated by everyone.

"I remember before coming here tonight, I told myself not to think too much about it (the awards)."

"I didn't want to give myself pressure and didn't want to be disappointed because the last three years, I didn't win after getting nominated," said Qi.

Veterans honoured

Terence Cao was named Best Supporting Actor for his work in the drama "The Best Things in Life", while Pan Ling Ling took home the Best Supporting Actress award, picking up another accolade for last year's blockbuster drama "Breakout".

Other notable winners at the Star Awards 2011 Show 2 include Kym Ng, who was named Best Variety Show Host, Lin Chi Yuan, who won the award for Best News Presenter and Joanne Peh, who won the award for Best Info-ed Programme Host as well as a Top 10 Favourite Female Artistes nod.

Veteran actress Xiang Yun was also conferred the title All-Time Favourite Artiste after winning the Top 10 Favourite Female Artistes award ten times in the past, joining the ranks of popular actresses like Zoe Tay, Fann Wong, Huang Bi Ren and Chen Li Ping.

Tay Ping Hui will receive the title next year after he won his tenth Top 10 Favourite Male Artistes award at Sunday's award ceremony.

This year's Top 10 Favourite Male Artistes list contained a few surprises.

Popular actor Dai Yang Tian's name was ubiquitously absent from the list while Y.E.S. 93.3FM deejay Dennis Chew, who only entered the fray at the last minute due to an oversight during the consolidation of the nomination poll results, managed to make it onto the list for the second year in a row.

Evergreen actor Huang Wen Yong, best known for his role as Ah Shui in the iconic 1984 Singapore drama "The Awakening", also made it onto the list for the first time after having been nominated for the past 17 years.
